Ever wondered what to do with those hollow prunings? We've recently pruned our Pheasant Berry shrub (Leycesteria formosa) the stems of which are hollow. These will provide an ideal habitat for little critters to shelter in. We have started to bundle the prunings together and will use them to form bug hotels. So, not only will the shrub look better this coming year - it has wonderful flowers followed by berries - but will be helping biodiversity on the allotment. Lets hope some beneficial insects take up residence!

Bright January Day
A lovely sunny and calm day today at DigIn. Great to see the sun again and feel its warmth while pruning the apple trees in the orchard.
The recent rain has topped up the pond beautifully - ready for the annual mass frog visit in a few weeks time.
Major work has been started on a neglected area of the allotment, it will be interesting to see how the area is transformed from a mound of debris into ... well, we'll have to wait and see !!!

It's pruning time...
...so out with the secateurs, loppers and pruning saws!
Here's Linda carefully sawing off an old stem on a blackcurrant. That'll make younger shoots grow, which is where you get most blackcurrants.
And here's Stephen and Sarah deciding what to prune on one of our Bramley's Seedling apple trees. Pruning (in my opinion!) can be quite a thoughtful task, one which you can lose yourself in. Till someone calls "TEA UP!"

Dig In will be running a Pruning Workshop on Saturday 26th January, led by local fruit tree expert Marc Richardson. We will be pruning a range of fruit bushes including blackcurrants, gooseberries, grape vines and apple and pear trees. If you have a tree on site we might be able to help you prune it on the day. Pulp Friction are providing a hot lunch. The workshop is free of charge with a suggested donation of £10. Booking essential with Lauren on 07943700302.
